In modern societies one can see the following types of families:

Nuclear family: The Nuclear Family is a family group consisting of a mother and a father and their children. This is the family type that is mostly preferred.

Single-parent family: This type of family can be created by unwed motherhood, divorce, or death of a spouse. This can be either a father or a mother who is singly responsible for the raising of a child. The child can be by birth or adoption. They may be a single parent by choice or by life circumstances. The other parent may have been part of the family at one time or not at all.

Blended family/ Step family: This type of family is a family group comprises of mixed parents: one or both parents remarried, bringing children of the former family into the new family. Ex: step-parents or step-siblings or both.

Same-Sex Parent Families: Same sex families are an assortment of family arrangements. Because same-sex couples cannot conceive together, their children arrive by a multiplicity of routes into families that assume a variety of shapes. In many cases (no one knows just how many), children living with gay and lesbian couples are the biological offspring of one member of the couple, whether by an earlier marriage or relationship, by arrangement with a known or anonymous sperm donor (in the case of lesbian couples), or by arrangement with a surrogate birth mother (in the case of male couples).Some 2 million children have parents who are gay, lesbian or bisexual.
