Hi there!!
This is a new kind of article sequence from our website. The motto of this section is the sociological analysis of articles, situations, and all current events. This will be helpful for your Sociology Minor, Major, or in India for University and Public service examinations.
Today’s Sociological analysis is on famous Netflix season “Mind hunter”
How does a criminal think? Why does he think that way? This may be a subject matter of psychology but this season comfortably digs a smooth sociological probe into the familial relations of the criminals and their social bonds with their kith and kin. A student who has done their master’s in sociology tries to give questions to his boyfriend who works with the FBI, it further acts as a major catalyst to investigate and solve the cases that are nearly impossible!
One of the main characters of this play, Debbie, played by Hannah Gross, is a graduate student in sociology, studying deviance. In the very first episode, Debbie describes the sociological approach to deviance to her date, a somewhat listless young FBI agent named. In a bar, she admonishes Holden: “You teach about criminality, but you’ve never heard of Labelling Theory” Labelling theory had its origins in Suicide, a book by French sociologist Émile Durkheim. He noticed that crime is not so much a violation of a penal code, as it is an act that outrages the society. He was the first to recommend that deviant labeling satisfies that purpose and satisfies society’s need to control the behavior. Labeling theory is closely related to social-construction and symbolic-interaction analysis.
Here the subject matter is studied through establishing thinking on deviance at the time seems to have dictated only two kinds of murder: “crimes of passion” and “crimes of desperation.” Unhinged acts were simply beyond comprehension. Reiterating Durkheim’s contribution to our understanding of suicide: Theories of why people committed suicide were based upon moral and spiritual motives, rather than sociological ones. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), before this team’s investigation, had no interest in a scientific understanding of these new murders.
The interesting aspect is all about giving taxonomies like deviant terminology, sequence killer, pathological conditions, moral absenteeism and thereby conducting a relationship between them to chase the cases they find!!
This Netflix season pictures mark the beginnings of a research project: looking out a problem, go conduct some research and observations, play with the concepts and ideas, revisit the preconceptions of the research, think about the existing literature, start to operationalize what you want to measure, research some more, then start to think about publication! One of the best parts of the show is that it shows just how difficult their search process can be! That was how positivists like Spencer, Durkheim, and Auguste Comte, wanted to create a distinct new field with its own group of scientific facts. He desired that sociology would become the “queen science,” i.e. the study that was more important than the natural sciences that preceded it!!
