APEDA- Aatma Nirbhar Bharat| Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav

According to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, to boost the export potential of agricultural and processed food products from north-eastern states, the APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) facilitated a shipment of fresh Burmese grapes referred to as ‘Leteku’ in the Assamese language has been exported to Dubai.

Burmese grapes Leteku are packed with Vitamin C and Iron. The consignment was sourced and packed at a collection center in the Darang district of Assam.

APEDA has provided financial assistance to the private sector to set up a packed house at Guwahati which has fulfilled the infrastructure or mandatory requirement for the export of vegetables and fresh fruits to Europe.

The Agricultural and Processed Food  Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) was established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act passed by the parliament in December 1985.
  • Since its inception, APEDA has been carrying out promotional activities to bring the North-Eastern states on the processed food products and agricultural export map of India.
  • APEDA undertakes various market promotion activities for evolving structured marketing strategies for market intelligence for making informed decisions, skill development, export of food products, capacity building, international exposure, and high-quality packaging.

Recent activities of APEDA

To boost the export potential of agricultural products, APEDA has exported its 1st commercial shipment of Halman variety of apricots from the union territory of Ladakh to Dubai.

Jackfruits sourced from the Tripura-based Krishi Sanyoga Agro Producer Company Ltd were exported to London through APEDA.

Vocal 4 GI:

APEDA had also assisted in exports of Geographical Indications (GI) certified Kaji Nemu (Assam lemon) to London. To date around 40 metric tonnes of Assam Lemon have been exported.

Recently, APEDA has facilitated the export of the first consignment of ‘red rice’ to the USA from Assam.

What is red rice?

 Red rice is Iron rich rice. It is grown in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam, without the use of any chemical fertilizer. The rice variety is referred to as ‘Bao-dhaan’. Red rice is an integral part of Assamese food.

Conclusion:

APEDA would continue to focus on the development of the northeastern region in terms of quality up-gradation, linking buyers to farmers, capacity building, infrastructure development and also strengthening the entire supply chain of agricultural produce from the north-eastern region.
