VAJRA PRAHAR 2023: Indo-US Special Forces Strengthening Bonds in Meghalaya

The 14th edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise “VAJRA PRAHAR 2023” has commenced at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. The US contingent, comprised of personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) of US Special Forces, is participating alongside the Indian Army contingent led by Special Forces personnel from the Eastern Command.

Focused on joint mission planning and operational tactics, Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR promotes the exchange of best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics between the Indian Army and US Army Special Forces. The inaugural edition took place in India in 2010, with the 13th edition held at the Special Forces Training School (SFTS) in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh. The current edition, spanning from November 21st to December 11th, 2023, is being conducted at Umroi Cantonment, Meghalaya.

Over the next three weeks, the participating forces will collaboratively plan and rehearse a series of Special Operations, Counter Terrorist Operations, and Airborne Operations in simulated conventional and unconventional scenarios, particularly in mountainous terrain. Noteworthy aspects include ‘Combat free fall insertion of troops from stand-off distances,’ ‘Water-borne insertion of troops,’ ‘Precision engagement of targets at long ranges,’ ‘Combat air controlling of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft,’ and ‘Airborne insertion and sustenance of troops.’

Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas and the sharing of best practices among the Special Forces of both nations. It plays a crucial role in enhancing interoperability and strengthening defense cooperation between the armies of India and the United States of America.
