“Swachhta Tax” On Tourists Taking Photos

  • The Parra panchayat of the North Goa had started levying tax on shooting videos or clicking pictures in its jurisdiction.
  • Parra in Goa is best known for its scenic road lined with coconut trees, and it often serves as a backdrop in several Bollywood films, including Shahrukh Khan’s- ‘Dear Zindagi’.
  • The main idea behind imposing the tax was not to earn revenue for the village panchayat but to deter the photographers and tourists from holding up traffic along the narrow road during their shoots and also throwing garbage around the place.
  • The tax had also annoyed the travel and tourism industry stakeholders in Goa, who had expressed serious concern that such a tax may be emulated in other coastal villages, which would deter the tourists from visiting these areas
  • As a result, the Panchayat announced the withdrawal of a tax
