National Commission for Women launches- She is a Changemaker Programme

National Commission for Women launches a Pan-India Capacity Building Programme called ‘She is a Changemaker’ for Women in Politics i.e., women representatives at all levels, gram panchayats to parliament members and political workers including office bearers of National/State political parties.

The capacity-building programs were launched by Ms. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of, National Commission for Women. Speaking at the launch event, Ms. Rekha Sharma said that increased women’s participation in the politics of the country is the need of the hour, and the National Commission for Women is committed to helping them in their journey to the Parliament. “We believe that this program will benefit every woman who wishes to make an identity for her in politics and help her to claim her rightful space in politics. I hope that the ‘She is a Changemaker’ project will mark a new beginning in the lives of women who are determined to bring a positive change in society,” said Ms. Sharma.

What is the purpose of the introduction of this program?

• To improve the leadership skills of grassroots women political leaders in the country.
• The capacity-building program will be organized in association with region-wise training institutes.
• To enhance capacity building among women political leaders and improve their decision-making and communication skills including, writing, oration, etc.

The training programs under the ‘She is a Changemaker’ series were officially launched in collaboration with Rhambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, Thane, Maharashtra.

About National Commission for Women:

The National Commission for Women was set up as a statutory body in January 1992 under the National Commission for women act, 1990 to recommend remedial legislative measures, facilitate redressal of grievances, review the Constitutional and Legal safeguards for women, and advise the Government on all policy matters affecting women.

The mission of NCW: To strive towards enabling women to achieve equality and equal participation in all spheres of life by securing their due rights and entitlements through suitable policy formulation, legislative measures, effective enforcement of laws, implementation of schemes/policies, and devising strategies for the solution of specific problems/situations arising out of discrimination and atrocities against women.

The vision of NCW: The Indian Woman, secure in her home and outside, fully empowered to access all her rights and entitlements, with an opportunity to contribute equally in all walks of life.

The commission took up the important social issues like child marriage; Parivarik Mahila Lok Adalats, sponsored legal awareness programs and reviewed laws such as Indian Penal Code 1860, PNDT Act 1994, Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 to make them more stringent and effective.

Composition of NCW:

The National Commission for Women shall consist of a Chairperson, who shall be committed to the cause of women, to be nominated by the Central Government, five members to be nominated by the Central Government from amongst persons of integrity, ability, and standing who have had experience in law or legislation, management of an industry potential of women, trade unionism, administration, women’s voluntary organizations ( including women activist ), economic development, education, health, social welfare;  provided that at least one member each shall be from amongst persons belonging to the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes respectively; a Member-Secretary shall be nominated by the Central Government who shall be an expert in the field of organizational structure, management, or sociological movement, or an officer who is a member of an all-India service or of a civil service of the Union or holds a civil post under the Union with the required experience.
